Nursing School Articles : Important Information to Know before Entering Nursing School by arianna jordan
Are you considering a career in nursing? Before you enter nursing school, there are a few things you should know. Most of them have to do with getting to know yourself, and a few have to do with understanding the nursing profession. If you are thinking of entering nursing school, here are some of the things you should be considering.
What nursing field do you want to specialize in?
There are many different fields within the nursing profession, and most of them have very specific requirements for education and licensing. If you're dreaming of being a Public Health nurse, for instance, there are licensing requirements and special courses that you'll need to take. Knowing those things will make your decision of where to go to nursing school far easier, you can eliminate any nursing school that doesn't offer the required courses.
If you do not know what kind of nursing you want to do, or even whether you really want to be a nurse, there are many different ways to get some practical experience in nursing before you start nursing school. Volunteer in a hospital or nursing home to see what nurses do first hand. Talk with neighbors and relatives who are nurses and learn more about their jobs. Ask specific questions. Find out what they like about their positions, and what they would like to see improved. Becoming knowledgeable about these aspects, yourself and about the career as a whole will make it easier for you to start planning your education and your career.
What are your short term and long term career goals?
One of the advantages of choosing a career in nursing is that you can often work your way up the career ladder while you gain more advanced degrees. Setting up a plan to do that will make it far easier to take advantage of opportunities like tuition reimbursement. It's fairly easy these days to get an Associate's Degree in Nursing, which is your first step on the career ladder. That ADN will be your main requirement for a job in nursing, which will often include tuition reimbursement and other assistance from your employer in pursuing a more advanced degree. That kind of advance planning can help you decide which schools to attend, which ones your company will reimburse, and which courses to take. You may also find that your job experience gives you a leg up on your practicum that's required to advance in some nursing courses.
Do you intend to get an advanced nursing degree?
If you already know that you intend to get an advanced nursing degree, find out what is exactly required to reach that level before you start your nursing school education. It is far easier to map your education from the end backwards, so to speak, because you will be able to plan your courses and classes to fulfill as many requirements along the way as you can. You can also use that knowledge to try to arrange work in the field where you want to end up. If you know that you'll need to do a turn on a med-surgery floor as part of your requirements for a degree next year, you can try to arrange that in advance through your work. If you know that a class you want to take in two years has a prerequisite, you can try to take it before you even enroll in nursing school.
The three major nursing degrees are:
LPN - Licensed Practical Nurse - An LPN program is a diploma program that takes about a year. As an LPN you'll be able to do some patient care under the direction of doctors and registered nurses.
ADN - Associates Degree in Nursing - An ADN typically takes about two years to complete and is generally given at a community college. As an ADN, you will often be able to apply for licensing and registration in your state and will be able to do direct patient care in most settings.
BSN - Bachelor of Science in Nursing - A BSN is a four year program that prepares you to work in most care settings. If you intend to eventually get a Masters in Nursing, or would like to get into nursing management, a BSN is your best choice.
What kind of nursing degree do you need to do the work you want to do?
Find out the requirements for the kind of nursing that you want to do. Will you need a BS in Nursing? Can you learn what you need in a hospital certificate program? Is an LPN course right for you? Once you have figured out which degree you want to get, you can start looking at nursing schools that offer that degree. Some things you might consider when choosing are:
- Am I academically equipped for this program? - Can I get financial aid for nursing school? - Can I get tuition reimbursement from my employer for nursing school? - Is the school you're considering accredited? - Do you want to attend nursing school online?

Nursing School Students: Is An Online Degree The Right Choice For You?
Distance Learning Online Nursing School Students: Is An Online Degree The Right Choice For You? by Ruby Nicholson
Prospective nursing school students, are you considering an online nursing degree as one of your options? Well, we've got good news and bad news for you.
You can already imagine the many advantages of online courses: setting up a schedule that's convenient for you, no commute, no parking hassles, saving on gas money or public transportation costs, and being able to work and go to school at the same time.
However, it is not possible to get every type of degree online - and there is no such thing as a Licensed Practical Nursing Degree or Associate's Degree in nursing that can be obtained entirely online. This is for good reason: one of the most vital components of a nursing student's education is to gain practical real world experience in a hospital or other medical setting, under the observation and direction of a registered nurse.
To our knowledge, there is only one nursing school program in the country which allows its students to complete even the majority of their course study online to get an R.N. degree - the Online Accelerated Nursing Program at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh. It is intended for people who already have a bachelor's degree. The school's online program accepts only a very limited number of students. You must have numerous prerequisite courses completed, and have excellent grades in those courses, before you can even apply. Many states do not offer the clinicals that students must take, under the supervision of an RN, in order to complete the course, so students who live in those states can't take the program. Also students must go to the Oshkosh campus several times in order to do clinicals and take various tests there.
So what kind of nursing degree can you get online?
After taking a one-year course at a community college, vocational school, or private career college, to become a Licensed Practical Nurse, and after getting licensed as a practical nurse, there are many online LPN to RN programs, and they are becoming more popular as the demand for registered nurses grows greater.
There are also online paramedic-to-RN courses, and there are online respiratory therapist-to-RN courses.
In all three of these cases, it is vitally important to contact your state Board of Nursing to make sure that they accredit the school that is offering the online degree.
If they don't, then even if you successfully complete the course, you can not take the NCLEX-RN and work as a nurse in your state. Some states will accept online LPN to RN programs, but not other types of online nursing programs. Some states will accept certain schools' online LPN to RN degree programs, but not other schools.
There are also online LPN to Bachelor's Degree of Science in nursing programs, online RN to Bachelor's Degree of Science in Nursing Programs, online Master's Degree in Nursing Programs...so there is a lot that can be accomplished with online nursing schools. However, you can not get all of your nursing training online, and that's actually a good thing. Think about it. Would you want to be cared for and have your life in the hands of a nurse whose only training was online?

RN to BSN Online - Two Top Nursing Schools
RN to BSN Online - Two Top Nursing Schools by Michael V. Gruber, MPH
The number of people available to fill the constant demand for nurses is falling farther and farther behind the demand. Nurse's aides are becoming registered nurses as quickly as they can. In turn, it is incumbent upon registered nurses to take the next step and earn their bachelor's of science in online nursing degree or BSN as quickly as possible.
There is such a need for nurses that you can now get paid to travel anywhere you like with an extra traveling bonus and the ability to work during your vacation for months at a time. There is no other job in the country that offers the same benefits while allowing you to also choose your destination and the amount of time you will stay!
The job shortage also allows those in the nursing profession a flexibility in location that few other careers can claim. Should you need to relocate across the country to be with a relative or when your spouse gets a promotion, there will be no problem securing a job when you get there. Apply ahead of time and start working as soon as you get to town or wait until you get there and check out the facilities first.
One way to make sure that you secure the best position and the highest salary possible is to make sure that your resume has the educational training to match your experience. Even if you intend to take on a few of the traveling nursing positions or relocate in the near future, you can begin upgrading to a BSN online at schools like Jacksonville University and University of Phoenix online.
With an online nursing degree you can begin immediately to earn the credits you need to become a BSN and up your pay grade as well as increase your job options and opportunities. At Jacksonville University, you can transfer any classes that you've taken at other schools and apply the credit toward earning a BSN degree. Labs, practice projects, homework, tests, and lessons all take place online so you don't have to worry about missing work or rearranging your schedule.
At University of Phoenix, you can not only earn your BSN but when you complete that, you can go on to earn a masters degree in science and specialize in health care education, health care management, integrative health care, or health care administration. With a higher degree, you can make yourself a shoe in for any nursing position anywhere in the country with the highest possible pay grade for the position. It's worth it to at least check it out!

Online nursing schools are available to all nurses who are looking to expand their academic horizons. These programs offer degree programs in LPN, RN, bachelor of nursing, master of nursing, and also a PhD program in nursing. Choosing an online nursing degree program depends on several factors. If a person wants to become a nurse, they will have to see if the program accepts those with no prior nursing experience. For those who are returning to school, they have to decide which direction they want to take their career. A nurse can obtain their RN license after going to school for two years, or they can stay and earn an RN with a four-year degree. The more education a nurse has, the more they could earn.
Online nursing schools offer many programs to those who would like to specialize in a certain area of nursing. For those who want to work in burn units, child wards, elderly care facilities, or the forensic science field, continuing one's education will help them get the jobs they are the most interested in having. Enrolling in one of these programs is similar to enrolling at a college or technical school. A nurse will have to provide transcripts from other institutions they attended and then supply a work history if applying for programs that require prior work experience. Many programs do require this, especially higher level education such as a master's degree. One or two personal references may be needed depending on the program.
Once accepted, the school will send the computer requirements needed to receive all class requirements, online videos and other correspondence an instructor might send. Online nursing schools are primarily work at one's own pace but time management is up to the student and all assignments must be completed in the time allotted. There is more time given than in a traditional class room setting, but it is still expected that people put in the work needed to complete the degree. An online nursing degree can be a wonderful asset to anyone's career.

Searching for Nursing Assistant schools online? In today's competitive nursing industry, it is becoming more difficult to gain entry level positions without having some form of education and training; this is one of the many reasons why online nursing assistant schools might be an ideal option for you.
While there are many vocational and trade schools that provide a variety of health care training programs, the unique difference between community nursing assistant colleges and online colleges is that students can access classes over the Internet 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However, you must understand that online schools require the same or more dedication as traditional schools due to the nature of the field and the personal commitment to independent study.
Common online courses that are provided by online nursing assistant schools include an introduction to nursing assistant duties, as well as classes in infection control, emergency care, home health care, personalized patient care, human anatomy and physiology, vital sign measurements, and other associated patient care practices.
In-depth nursing assistant training will usually include more thorough training that involves online clinical labs. These classes literally bring the phlebotomy laboratory to the computer screen so that prospective nursing assistants can learn how to effectively collect blood specimens, how to inject medicine, and how to perform CPR and First Aid, take a pulse, and perform ultrasound.
Once students have completed all online nursing courses, and have met all requirements for graduation, candidates will need to take an online exam to earn a Nursing Assistant certificate and transcript of completion.
According to the US Dept. of Labor Statistics, professional nursing assistants have the potential to earn between $7 - $14 per hour or more, depending on the level of education and practical experience. So if you think online nursing assistant schools are in your future, why not apply today and take that first step towards a new and rewarding career?
