Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program in Nurse-Midwifery
At Philadelphia University you can become a nurse-midwife without moving or uprooting your family. Our midwifery education program was designed from the beginning for distance learning— and it works! There are three “trimesters” of both study and clinical experience completed in your home community and three on-campus sessions at Philadelphia University. Our on-campus sessions focus on intensive learning of hand skills, guest lectures by experts in midwifery and other specialties, and time to bond with classmates and faculty. Classes begin twice a year, in fall and spring. Clinical experience begins in the eighth month of study.
  • 21-month, computer-based, distance-learning program
  • Small, intimate classes meet in a “virtual seminar room”
  • Personal mentoring by experienced Midwife Tutors (Faculty)

Nurse Practitioner and Foreign Educated Midwife Advanced Placement Options
The Midwifery Institute of Philadelphia University has developed a rich curriculum designed by experts in midwifery, adult education, and distance learning. Our unique “Midwife Tutors” are both experienced midwives and educators dedicated to blending the best of self-directed learning, interactive instruction, and nurturing to give you one-on-one contact – even at a distance. Our clinical faculty (preceptors) are practicing nurse-midwives in your community, who will mentor you during your clinical experiences. Our 21-month, full-time program integrates theory and practice, creating a dynamic blend of midwifery tradition and new technologies. Our certificate nurse-midwifery program is accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM).

Master of Science Completion Program in Midwifery
Philadelphia University was the first school in the United States to offer a Master of Science Program in Midwifery.

  • For CNMs/CMs and those currently enrolled in certificate programs
  • Cost-effective, 12-month, distance-learning program with no on-campus sessions
  • Customized electives in teaching, practice administration, advanced clinical practice, international health, and research

The Master of Science Program in Midwifery (MS) provides the option to complete a master’s degree entirely at a distance in one year. Students will be awarded 24 credits for their ACNM-accredited certificate in nurse-midwifery/midwifery. The final 12 graduate credits will be taken through Philadelphia University and will include three required courses and one elective. The MS program values and builds upon previous nurse-midwifery/midwifery education and practical experience. This program is available to midwives certified by the ACNM, as well as student midwives currently enrolled in ACNM-accredited educational programs.

The 21st-century midwife must be prepared to act as an administrator, teacher and advanced clinical practitioner. This program facilitates professional development in these areas through innovative interactive technologies. State-of-the-art communication technology coupled with the professional expertise of an accomplished and caring faculty will maximize your educational experience. Best of all, you will remain in your own community as you work toward completing your master’s degree in just 12 months. The program model focuses on graduate-level skills of inquiry and critical thinking and uses a distributive distance-learning approach where students interact asynchronously with each other and the faculty via computer.

At Philadelphia University, we have planned the program to accommodate the work demands of your clinical practice. The program involves extensive reading and participation in online discussions and learning activities. The richness and diversity of experience that each student brings to the discussions has been a source of inspiration for the faculty and adds to the rigor of the program. Faculty are experienced nurse-midwifery educators who are comfortable working with distance learners. Faculty and technical-assistance personnel are readily available to students.

Combined Certificate and Master of Science Programs
Students are eligible to enroll in both programs (CNM & MS) concurrently and complete them at essentially the same time.
