Distance Learning MBA Programs May be the Solution to the Flailing Economy
With the economy taking a nose dive and unemployment reaching record numbers, many people are finding themselves laid off or in the uncomfortable position of lacking job security.
Depression, however, is not setting in for those taking grandma's advice and making lemonade out of the lemons they've been handed. With a nudge from the economy, more people are enrolling in distance learning MBA programs. Whether laid off or currently on the job, people, more than ever, are finding that earning a master's degree is important in gaining or maintaining secure and high level employment.
Choosing to participate in a distance learning MBA program is not only a decision chosen by those who are concerned about job security, but it is also an opening to the path of upper management. Many people, those who take their career seriously, have goals for the executive positions in their corporation. They understand that gaining a master's degree is an important feather in their cap. Not only is it a showy feather, important on a resume, but it is also a functional feather that equips the individual with business savvy. Corporate executives know that it is the person with the MBA who is best suited to make the intricate and meaningful decisions within the organization. Through their studies, these individuals have examined the business models of various successful Fortune 500 companies; they are prepared with an assortment of ideas and skills both gained from their education.
Distance learning MBA programs are highly respected as they have been around for more than 150 years. Most universities today offer some selection of online college courses. Not only is distance learning a well acknowledged and accepted path for gaining a degree, earning a distance learning MBA is moving toward the more traveled road to education. It's easy to understand why, since sitting in a classroom at a designated time is difficult for those in the midst of family and career.
Distance learning programs have gained high esteem in the learned community; the programs open up an opportunity to work on a master's degree for those who don't live near a campus. The vast majority of people simply don't have the luxury of living in the center of Boston, Providence, San Diego or some other college town, so an opportunity for a university education by distance learning is a smart alternative.
Physically attending classes at a university campus can be cumbersome for multiple reasons; the most obvious reasons are because of possible time conflicts as well as driving and distance constrictions. With distance learning MBA programs, study materials can arrive in a person's mailbox. In the past, that would mean materials such as CDs or videos would be delivered to the big black front yard mailbox courtesy of the friendly neighborhood postal worker. Today, your mailbox is sitting on your computer. The online learning atmosphere is quite advanced. Students are able to attend virtual classes that are able to be viewed on a computer or iPod. The virtual experience extends to class lectures, exams, question and answer sessions with professors, and discussion groups such as online student forums.
Distance learning programs are available and offer an easy solution for that individual who doesn't want to settle for mediocrity in their career. Distance learning programs are easy to access because they can work around an individual's time and proximity needs. Clearly, the key to the executive floor is packaged in the degree since the degree provides a higher skill set and the strength of knowledge. Earning an MBA is almost expected now in today's competitive society. Corporations demand that their executive employees are experts in their field. Becoming that expert through earning a distance learning MBA seems like an easy choice.

Advantage and Disadvantage of Distance Learning
Like everything else in the world, you have to understand both the advantage and disadvantage of distance learning. Much depends upon the student undertaking an online course - how he best utilises the pros and cons of distance leaning. For some, if the flexibility that distance learning has to offer is a boon, for others that flexibility might become a difficulty in keeping themselves motivated. There are two sides to any coin, and an individual willing to take up distance learning needs to analyze and understand both the advantage and disadvantage of distance learning.
The Advangages
The most promiment advantage of distance learning is the flexibility it has to offer to students. Anyone, anywhere can realize their dreams of education through the various distance learning programs available online. In today's hectic world, distance learning makes it possible for a home-maker or a busy professional to pursue further studies while allowing them to continue in their respective roles in everyday life.
By breaking down the barriers of a typical classroom and the need for phycial attendance, new vistas are opened up for students by allowing them to learn from the convenience of their homes. You get to work at your own pace, and have your privacy. Gone are the pressures of rushing to attend classes on campus, the student is his or her own boss in distance learning and that turns out to be an important factor when considering the advantage and disadvantage of distance learning.
The Disadvantages
If flexibility is a boon for some, for other students it could turn out to be a deterrent. Owing to the lack of a physical teacher and a classroom, it might get difficult for some students to motivate themselves to study harder, and complete assignments on time. Procrastination is a drawback, and people who have a tendency to take it easy should stay away from an online course. Also, due to the nature of online learning, students do not get to enjoy personal interaction with fellow students and teachers; there are no group discussions that one can take part in, and the social part of the education process is lacking in distance learning.
Whatever be the case it is up to the individual to survey the advantage and disadvantage of distance learning, and decide for himself if he is up to the challenge. In distance learning you are your own competitor, and to succeed you need to motivate yourself continously. If you are up to it, then distance learning is for you.

The Importance of Tutor Support in Distance Learning
Like any other student, students of online courses also need constant tutor support in distance learning to keep themselves involved and motivated. In a physical classroom, the students can maintain eye contact with their teachers and ask questions promptly in case of a doubt; in contrast a distance learning student and teacher are physically away from each other. In such a scenario, using the technology available for imparting education effectively is the most critical factor. Technology now exists that allows teachers and students to communicate in real time.
Distance education also requires changes in behavior for both the teacher and the learner. The successful student develops persistence and self-motivation. The successful distance education teacher becomes fluent with new technology and develops new instructional styles for the benefit of the students.
Can Constant Tutor Support in Distance Learning be Ensured?
In earlier days, teachers involved in distance learning used to interact with their students through telephone, faxes or letters. The turnaround time between the students submission of work and the teachers corrections was relatively slow. However, today with the latest technology being employed for distance education courses, and the successful multimedia interactions between teachers and students, the communication is almost in real-time and sometimes even in real-time. Efficient tutor support in distance learning is largely dependent on how fast a distance education instructor can get familiarized with the technology being employed, devise new teaching methods, and manage student expectations.
Right Guidance Allows Distance Education Students to Perform Better
With the right amount of support from their teachers, distance learning students can perform as well as, if not better than on-campus students. The distance learning instructor has to ensure that his students are constantly involved in the course; the teachers have to encourage dialogues, debates and discussions amongst themselves and their students to ensure that the online students do not feel neglected or lonely. The virtual classroom has often been misconstrued to be a lonely place; however through high activity and collaborative learning, the virtual classroom can be turned into a think-tank of sorts which encourages freedom of thought and expression.
Through being enthusiastic and involved himself, any instructor can lend the right tutor support in distance learning courses. There is opportunity as well for individuals who wish to focus solely on providing tutoring to distance learners. Familiarity with technology, coupled with a genuine interest in the students' lives brings enthusiasm towards teaching, and sensitivity towards the students' backgrounds can help a distance education tutor a great deal.

The Use Of Internet For Distance Learning
Technology has changed the face of distance learning. From the mailbox to the internet, distance learning has gone through transformations that have made it what it is today. The print aspect of distance learning is still ever present because of the need to ensure that the student can read and write.
Some online colleges are bogus and your inability to know the fake from the good ones can land you in hot water. Be careful not to trust any online distance offer that looks too good to be true. Online distance programs that offer you an education in the shortest amount of time should also not be trusted.
Distance learning program eliminates a number of costs. As a distance learning student, you wont have to pay accommodation fees. Your cost of running to and fro a campus is drastically lessened with a distance learning program. Some of these are the reasons why many continue to enroll in distance programs all over the world.
If you are the shy type, you might not want to school amongst a host of other people. There may have been a time when you wouldn't have had a choice, but distance learning these days has grown into a practice that is open to anyone at all who is interested. This is as opposed to back in the day when only the underprivileged were considered for the program.
Spam and other kinds of junk always find their way into your email. If you did not delete them so readily, you would find that many of them provide information on how to get the diploma/degree of your dreams. You need to be very conscious that these are phantom offers and your distance learning dreams will not be fulfilled that way.
Although distance learning has tackled a lot of problems in its long history, there is one problem that it is not going to deal with too soon. This is the issue of examination malpractices, or simply, writing tests under controlled conditions. There is no easy way to guarantee that, so the schools and colleges play by ear as each year and each program comes.
Audiographics is important in distance learning. It's called electronic whiteboard because of the use of the screen of the computer to display written information. Audiographics is most effective for the lecture mode of delivery. Audiographics is an excellent avenue for extensive discussions on several topics in the process of study.
Don't be taken in by flashy online distance learning adverts that promise to give you the impossible. Distance learning online can be completed in a maximum of two years if you are serious. Any distance learning offer that promises a degree in less than a year should be ignored.

Online and Blended Learning in Medicine: Continuing Medical Education
Online education has become an important component of mainstream education in recent years. Economic and time considerations have gradually lead prospective students to actively search for schools online and find combinations in blended education (a mix of traditional education methodology with online and technology aided learning) that fit their considerations the best.
In recent years professionals have likewise turned to online educational programs as a way of augmenting their knowledge base and capability in the workplace. Specialized training can easily be completed online with the minimal amount of time required for hands-on coursework while classes are conducted in a variety of ways through online portals and can easily be managed to fit individual schedules. The medical profession is one such profession that has embraced online and blended education in a big way.
Treatments, procedures and methodology as well as theory and practical application are all now taught online in various blended structures and while professionals go about their practice, they can now learn from the most brilliant minds in their respective fields at the same time, even if they are half way around the world.
Online CME for Professionals
CME stands for continuing medical education, that is, a form of continuing education through which medical professionals refresh their knowledge and learn about the new developments in their fields. CME activities take place in the form of classroom/seminar events as well as through publications, online courses and other electronic media such as DVD, Video/audio presentations.
CME in North America
CME has become a necessity in many parts of the US, for instance, Arizona State requires 40 hours of CME study every two years in order for practitioners of medicine to maintain their licenses. Within the US, CME for medical professionals is regulated by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and the American Osteopathic Association.
CME in Canada
400 credits of CME are required every five years, with at least 40 in each year. The certification is provided by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) and the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). The RCPSC certifies its members, specialist physicians, through the Maintenance of Certification Programs.
Online CME
Types of instruction
In online CME, professionals are most likely to encounter the following formats of instruction;
Text and graphic journals (like reading a textbook)
Slide-audio/video lectures (Like attending a seminar or lecture)
Case-based online interactive learning (where students make decisions according to the case study and clinical presentation)
Quiz questions and answers (computer programs ask questions and provide correct explanations and information in accordance with the answers)
Correspondence courses (a group of doctors study similar modules and correspond with each other, sharing knowledge and experience).
Online CME Costs
Online CME is very affordable. This affordability is compounded by the fact that the usual benefits of online education, and the freedom it provides professionals, applies to online medical education as well and therefore reduces the overall cost of CME.
Common rates;
3500+ hours of CME conducted over the internet is free.
18000+ hours of online CME costs as low as $5-$15 per hour.
A few specialist courses are more expensive than $15 per hour due to the nature of the training.

Considering the Negatives - Disadvantage of Distance Learning
It helps a student to know the disadvantage of distance learning while considering taking up a course offered through this medium. New Age educational tools like e-courses are a godsend to people who want to study further but do not have the means to do so, however it is not necessary that every individual is cut out for distance education. So while weighing your options for advanced learning through distance courses, be sure to assess the downside of it and determine if your personality is compatible with distance education.
No Space for Procrastination
The greatest disadvantage of distance learning is the constant self-motivation that a student needs to keep himself from lagging behind. In distance education, a teacher and student are not in the same room physically, and there is no real inter-personal interaction between them. In case of an assignment submission in the traditional form of education, the constant reminder by your ever-present teacher may put the necessary pressure on you to perform. However, due to the remote nature of distance learning, the students might find themselves putting work off for another day. Moreover this procrastinating attitude hurts student's prospects, as they will find it difficult to keep to timelines and complete the necessary assignments.
Technological Know-How is Critical
The reach of online means of distance education has increased over the last few years as the IT sector has flourished. However, not everyone has access to these upgraded technologies, and there are millions who might not have the technical proficiency to utilize these resources to their optimum. People who live in remote areas may not have access to computers; moreover the high cost of computers keeps some people from purchasing one. Even if they do, their systems might not be compatible with the new technologies and they would be unable to use the educational tools. In such a case, distance learning is rendered futile, as low penetration of computers and high internet costs turn out to be an alarming disadvantage of distance learning.
Further yet, even though distance education has seen an unprecedented rise in the last few decades, the mindset of many people is still negative about its effectiveness. Though educational institutions are fast adopting this means of teaching, there is still time before online education becomes a first choice for students. A positive attitude and greater technological awareness seem to be the cure for this disadvantage of distance learning.

When it comes to safety on the road, a budding driver should learn the subject of defensive driving. A good online traffic school should give you all the basics of how to stay safe while driving.
For most people, driving safety is a primary concern. But with little time on their hands, getting a good education on safe driving could take the backseat or could be taken for granted altogether. Fortunately, Internet-based traffic schools are on the rise, providing you with the necessary courses on defensive driving, insurance reductions, ticket dismissals, etc. at your convenience. These courses are interactive, and are akin to those that are being offered in traditional driving schools.
For the busy individual, learning the basics of driving can take a toll on his or her time. But with an online traffic school, the student driver can access the interactive courses from the Internet, which means the courses can be taken anytime and anywhere. This eliminates the hassle of actually having to commute to an actual or physical classroom where you will be taught the basics of driving. With Internet traffic schools, learning the basics of driving plus other pertinent knowledge is possible even at the comfort of your own home.
Some of the courses covered in Internet traffic schools include information on how to get lower insurance premiums, and how to get tickets dismissed. Distance learning and blended education: The future course
The world is a more objective oriented environment these days. With the concepts of institutional learning and the definition of the term 'traditional student' changing all the time, so is the approach towards how educational instruction and training can be delivered in such a way as to make the learning process as individualized and effective, with a deeper emphasis on direct-individual attention and the accommodation of more students with specific responsibilities and needs which would render them unable to pursue classroom based learning.
The modern student
Today's new generation of students is no longer limited to fresh high-school graduates. Indeed, most of the students entering higher education are much more mature (the average age is 24) and come from more diverse backgrounds than ever before. Many students (80%) are proficient in the use of computer programs and the internet by the time they reach senior high, with many reporting that they had used some form of social media or other information sharing website, while almost all report the use of internet search engines to help research (and sometimes copy) homework assignments. The presence of MySpace, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube have changed the way the younger generation (of school, university or professional learners) interacts with each other and with static or dynamic information - using the web. Today, online customization allows you to mould yourself an environment of your own in cyberspace, connecting with those people and that information (news, sports, opera... anything) which you wish to connect to only; so why not try to apply the same principles to learning? The concept of distance and online learning is becoming a new way of life, and probably the future, for modern education.
Blended learning based on the web
Blended education is a type of education in which a large percentage of traditional classroom learning is replaced with web-based learning models (like online classrooms or automated teaching and testing systems), while face-to-face interaction is limited to those cases where such interaction is necessary.
Factors related to blended learning:
Blended education thus involves the replacement of 25-75 percent of classroom time with web based teaching. The mix actually depends upon the nature and type of the course, preferred teaching techniques, the instructor's experience level and the nature and type of students involved in the course or program. The most important component in any blended course is the quality and availability of online knowledge resources made accessible to students; such resources include a digital online library (many are already in use all over the world even for traditional campus-based courses), repository of lecture slides and online information links available for free use - there are already several commercial and open-source (free) e-learning management systems in use throughout the world which allow institutions to often place an entire curriculum online for students to access as they wish. Already, at least half of the courses offered at traditional institutions involve the use of some online resources as well as web-based communication.
Another major factor in today's blended environment is the use of online forums, limited access e-mail and online discussion groups - various systems (blogs, chat rooms and e-mail) - which help students engage in interactive study without the need to be present in the same classroom; the comfort level of modern students with this type of online interaction environment allows students to potentially learn much more (especially with the internet and Google at their command) than they would in a traditional setting.

Distance Learning – Online Schools
Author: Allen Anderson
Modern education has become diversified, with many variations and specializations on each and every field of work, available in various universities, colleges and training institutions all over the world today. Prospective students have a variety of options when it comes to picking courses and the institutions which offer them, however, the opportunity cost of education, especially for working students and those who support families, is high. Education is expensive and time consuming and students must spend additional money for accommodation and transportation (to commute to and from lectures and study sessions), as well as the time required to be spent in going to and attending classes and lectures. Distance learning, or e-learning, is the answer to all of these problems and offers students a viable alternative to traditional classroom based study.
Overview
Prospective students can now choose online and blended courses (where a small percentage of the coursework and assessments are completed in face-to-face environments while the majority are completed online) in order to schedule and balance educational activities with their work and family / social schedules. Students can now learn at any level (from certifications and training courses to associates, Bachelors, Masters or PhD degrees) completely online and from the comfort of their own homes - at whichever timings best suiting their schedules. Learners can choose from a variety of online schools which offer distance learning programs for students anywhere in the world and manage to gain certifications and complete online degree courses while their normal lives remain largely unaffected. E-learning degrees and certificates are just the same as traditional ones, allow you to work on your own schedule and help you save the time for your work and family or friends and also help you save on the cost of commuting and renting accommodation.
Modern Trends in E-Learning
Some of the latest trends in e-learning are carrying the distance learning trend into the new age of education. Students are likely to encounter most of these in any online course they pick, and they are designed to make learning as student-friendly as can be.
Mobile technologies
Mobile technologies will integrate learning solutions in the near future. This means that software and components for mobile phones will allow students to attend live-classrooms and access resource material for their studies using PDF's and cellular phones. This will aide students, especially those who work-on-the-move or live in rural areas, to connect to e-classrooms and libraries using their GSM-WAP phone services.
Simulation based learning
Software solutions like Flash etc make it easy to 'podcast' simulations over the internet to show processes and techniques to students as audiovisual demonstrations - which are beneficial to the learning process and which had previously been a part of traditional classroom learning only.
Adaptive learning environments
Adaptive learning environments are those which can be used to customize and 'individualize' the learning experience of student in accordance with their own preferences and styles of study. These electronic systems gain knowledge of a student's learning behavior, weaknesses and strengths and take in account the students personal preferences (relating to learning methods, time and resource requirements) and configure and reconfigure the learning system to make the learning experience easy and effective for a particular student.
